Brenda Shaughnessy is one of America’s most audacious and thrilling poets. Spanning twenty years and five collections, LIQUID FLESH: New & Selected Poems (2022) introduces readers outside the US to her work. Since debuting with the sexy swagger of 1999’s Interior with Sudden Joy, Shaughnessy has honed a poetic voice rich with contradictions: her poems are simultaneously tricky and blindingly ho...

In TANYA she weaves a tapestry of literary heritage and intimate reflection as she pays tribute to women artists and mentors, and circles the mysteries of friendship, love, art, and loss. In this powerful gathering of poems about her own “influencers” - as well as poems on Surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim and the young ...
Katie Donovan: Rootling
Переглядів 303 місяці тому
Irish poet Katie Donovan writes about the hungers which haunt our flesh and our fantasies, the conjunction of myth and the physical world of body and earth. Her visceral poems render new sensations, landscapes and perceptions, taking a fresh look at family and history, with daring imagery interwoven with language by turns playful and elegiac. The poems she reads here are: ‘Butter’, 'Yearn On', ...
Katie Donovan: May Swim

Katie Donovan reads and introduces six poems from May Swim (2024), her sixth book of poetry from Bloodaxe. By turns lyrical and sardonic, this timely collection is characteristically watery - candid and uncompromising in its refusal to inhabit the safer reaches of the shore. Themes of loss, widowhood and ageing co-exist with observations of her wild garden and its inhabitants, including a mange...

Your poems I heard you read in maybe 1983 in Eugene. Love you so much. You once said to me: Writing will always wait for you. ~ thanks for that. ~ Lizzie

The poet is from another country. He or she is from the country of what the Indian mystic Kabir called the “country of the sky”, the country of the wide open expanse, without the markings or divisions of national borders, caste or class. It is the freedom of the spirit to soar above narrow perspectives. However, one needs a dual citizenship. One above in that realm of the sky, and the below in the world of definitions, passports and citizenship. And poetry is the bridge that connects the two. A wonderful collection of poems. I like the musicality of your language.
